Greg's Humble Story
During the Fall of his first year at BU, Greg would chow-down many
pizzas and chug plenty of ale with his crew as a weekend warrior.
Subsequently, he gained his freshman-fifteen pounds with honors.
One day he was approached by a few friendly folks outside the GSU near a
table showcasing a cool looking trophy. “Hey there…” the kind fellow
said. “Have you ever considered playing Rugby?” Minutes into talking,
Greg quickly realized that this big rugby crowd could probably take over
every party on campus. And, the thrill of competing with the other
schools in New England also made it an intriguing proposition. Greg
decided to join the BU Rugby Club on the spot to help further their
champion status both on and off the pitch.
Greg was quickly enrolled to help with some creative fundraising
initiatives like a group run along the Charles River. He found new self
esteem when hitting the gym and a keen sense of camaraderie while at
practice with the team at Magazine Beach. Later, he would travel as far
as the Bahamas and across the pond to England while on tour, finding new
levels of competition and bringing it all back home to BU Rugby to help
build upon the club’s traditions.
After graduation, Greg quickly became a successful entrepreneur in New
York City with a nifty ice cream stand near Time Square. After a period
of life in the fast lane, Greg decided to take a leave from the
mainstream world to perhaps find a higher calling. His path soon led him
overseas once again, this time all the way up top the highest peak in
the Himalayas. This is when Greg began to dig deep as an apprentice to
an elder and wise Tibetan guru.
While in Tibet, Greg pondered the teachings and perspectives that
gradually began to give him new hope and a sparkle of inspiration, until
the time came when he felt at ease and more comfortable in his own skin.
Then the gods smiled upon him as the sky cleared, revealing a golden ray
of sunshine that gently cascaded upon a ten-thousand foot crevice at the
base of a glacier miles beneath his feet. While slightly stunned by this
miraculous vision, Greg quietly uttered his mantra ... "unga-galunga".
Motivated again, Greg said goodbye to the elders and quickly made his
way back down the mountain side and eventually onto a plane back to the
States with his family in California, USA.
Today, and now at age forty-one, Greg Horangic is pursuing happiness
with the American dream; a great family, a swell job and an unshakable
faith. And, recently when asked about his marvelous feat, he simply
replied, “I owe it all to Yukon Pete”.

A Letter from Ted Dow ('89) living in Australia in response to our global
outreach posted on 9/12/08...
Hi Todd,
Just checked out the website. Didn't expect to see
something highlighting me. Where did you find those pics? You have
just put in an overriding caption saying Ted Dow is the goofy red head with the
sliced off sleeves.
Thanks for the phone call too (though it was 3am here; when it rings at
that time everyone in the house knows its going to be for me).
I've been here for 14 years now. Benefit there is I can go
for the Wallabies when Team USA gets knocked out of cup competitions.
Probably here for good as I've married a local and am raising two boys and a
girl over here. My oldest son, Cameron, plays both Rugby League and Rugby
Union. He's one of those sneaky backs though rather than good, upstanding
forward who does all the work to make those guys look good.
Ironically enough, I still can't get away from the red and
white colors even all the way over here so BU Rugby is constantly on my mind.
Keep me plugged in for NYC in 2009. I might
just be able to make it.
Cheers and keep in touch,
Ted Dow
